During the year 1966, Bud Bushnell founded Genie Industries. At that time, he bought the manufacturing rights to a material lift that operated on compressed air. The name Genie originated from the "magic in the bottle" that was used to raise and lower the hoist. This mechanism really impressed lots of customers and therefore, the name was established.

Genie Industries was sold in the year 2002 and became a part of Terex Corporation.



In the first years after the sale, it was determined to maintain the Genie brand name within the Terex Aerial Work Platforms or AWP segment of Terex, because of the name's solid reputation in the marketplace. Hence, all Genie machines continue to be marketed under the Genie brand name.
